As imaging plays an increasingly central role in data-driven medicine, national policy and health IT standards are evolving to support a new era of connectivity and innovation. In this session, Dr. Thomas Keane will outline ONC's priorities for strengthening the national health IT infrastructure that underpins imaging data exchange, AI readiness, and clinical decision support. He will highlight how federal initiatives are accelerating adoption of modern standards, enabling secure and seamless movement of imaging data, and building the policy foundation for safe, high‑quality AI in the health technology ecosystem.
Objectives
- Explain how national health IT policy and ONC priorities shape imaging interoperability, data exchange, and AI readiness.
- Discuss strategies for aligning technology, policy, and trust to enable secure and scalable healthcare data exchange.
- Identify key challenges and opportunities in implementing interoperable imaging infrastructure across the national health IT ecosystem.

Biography
Dr. Thomas Keane serves as the ninth National Coordinator for Health Information Technology. An engineer and physician, Dr. Keane previously served in ONC and also as a Senior Advisor to the Deputy Secretary of HHS. Among other duties, he was an administrator of the COVID-19 Provider Relief Fund and lead the development of the AHRQ National Nursing Home COVID Action Network. Dr. Keane worked as a finite element software developer and enterprise software engineer prior to training as an interventional radiologist.
