Carl Swanson is the AVP Imaging Technology for MedStar Health. In this capacity, Swanson serves as the technical leader of a healthcare network of 10 hospitals with more than 90 image-enabled acquisition locations. Operating at the intersection of the clinical and IT domains he provides leadership and advice to MedStar Health on issues including image management, AI, integration, acquisitions, data architecture, migration, clinical imaging modalities, and vendor selection. He is the accountable business leader for all technical imaging systems for Radiology, Cardiology, Orthopaedics, Maternal Fetal Medicine, Enterprise Imaging, and Image Exchange. Additionally, he is a charter member of MedStar’s AI Center of Excellence, providing subject matter expertise on AI technical standards, architecture, governance, and implementation.
Swanson joined MedStar Health in 2010 with 7 years of vendor-side imaging experience at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital. As a member of the vendor community, he focused on both software development and regulatory issues authoring a successful FDA 510k clearance of an imaging processing module. Additionally, he worked extensively on aligning products with IHE Radiology, Cardiology, and then-nascent Eye Care Profiles.
Swanson holds a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science from the University of Maryland, Master of Science in Computer Science from the Johns Hopkins Whiting School of Engineering, and a Post-Baccalaureate Certificate in Clinical Informatics from the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine.
